Lovely book for the Li’l ‘Hoo to get introduced to proud traditions of UVA. Couldn’t have come at a better time, it’s my toddler’s new favorite book.
Spangle, an adorable, ruby-coloured, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, is the smallest puppy in his family. That makes things hard when his brothers and sisters get too rough with him, but worse than that, Spangle is too little to keep his magic in! An unexpected sneeze can result in all kinds of surprising things, like coloured sparks, or butterflies, or flowers. Spangle’s Most Magical Mother worries that he’ll never be ready to be a wizard’s apprentice.
But when Spangle accidentally falls into a raging river and is carried off over a waterfall, he finds himself on a magical adventure that takes him places he never imagined; even back in time, to a terrible night during the Great Fire of London. Will tiny Spangle learn to manage his magic in time to make it safely back home?
Gigi and Her Girl is a beautiful book for toddlers and young children written and illustrated by the multitalented Kathy Brandt. The book teaches the importance of treating animals (in this case, a dog) with respect, thoughtfulness, love and kindness; and that’s grand. Children’s vocabularies will be enhanced by their reading this book and grownups will be able to bond with small children as they read this fine book together. I also like how Kathy Brandt uses rhyming in this book; rhyming is one of my favorite ways to write for small children—it’s charming!
At the start of the story we quickly meet a little girl and her dog named Gigi. Naturally, Gigi the dog can’t talk so the little girl makes the mistake of making the dog uncomfortable by hugging the dog too tight; keeping the dog indoors too much so that the dog can’t chase squirrels; dressing the dog up in clothes that make the dog “scratchy and squished;” playing with the dog too roughly on the swing set and trampoline—and more!
However, after the dog chooses to sleep with the little girl’s big sister who treats the dog nicer, the little girl realizes that Gigi the dog has feelings, too—and then Gigi’s life becomes much happier. The little girl learns appropriate ways to bond with Gigi and treat Gigi right by playing with Gigi outside using a ball and giving Gigi a peanut butter treat—among other terrific things that a dog would love as well.
Overall, I highly recommend this lovely book for toddlers and young children so they can learn to treat animals with the respect, kindness, love and thoughtfulness that they deserve. Kathy Brandt’s book is a very special one and I am extremely impressed!
Here is a happy, lighthearted, “feel good about America” book for all ages starring two of man’s best friends-an adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and his pal, a chocolate Labrador Retriever. In captivating color photographs, these two canine pals have a grand old time in America-hobnobbing with the Statue of Liberty, skiing Ruthie’s Run at Aspen, dancing with Yankee Doodle.even going over Niagara Falls in a barrel! Tag along with them and revisit America’s grand old icons in a delightful new way-from Mount Rushmore to old Broadway. Running through the pages of the book are familiar lyrics from America’s much-loved patriotic songs. It’s like the Fourth of July on every page.
